File this under “no accounting for taste”. This homoerotic drawing is based off of the villain from Robin’s (as in “Batman and Robin”) origin story in Batman #1 from the late 30’s I believe. I’ve included a panel from that story (scanned from the reprint in “Batman: From the 30’s to the 70’s, published in 1971) so y’all can see my source material.

Bear nakedness with Boss Zucco! Were you aware of the re-drawing of that story in the sixties by Andru and Esposito? That's the way I first read the story in France :

I must say that the original forties version was sexier, though.
Thanks for the link. It's interesting. I used to loathe Ross Andru's artwork. In my youth he was one of my top 10 most hated comic book artists (along with Dick Dillin, Dick Ayers, Don Heck, Mike Sekowsky and George Tuska). I've come to appreciate them all in the past 5 or so years (except for Tuska; I haven't warmed up to him yet). I'm not wild about this work; It seems rushed. His version of Zucco is interesting; Andru takes the character in an almost Ernest Borgnine direction. That's cool, as I'm hot for Mr. B.
