I call this “The Question”, though I doubt it’s what Steve Ditko had in mind. Or maybe I should call it “The Question Mark” to avoid confusion.
This was sketched while waiting in the Doctor’s office. I call it “Thinking Inside the Box”.
Twas not my intention, but this ended up looking like Ed Asner, sort of. Not too surprising as Ed Asner was my first love as a 12 year old hitting puberty in the early 70’s. In fact, I realized I was gay when, while fantasizing about Lou Grant fucking Mary Richards, I replaced her with myself and found the fantasy much more successful.
This drawing started as the backside of a man standing in water but I realized he would be cropped at the neck (I had started him too big) so I turned him into a tree, making him part of my animus mundi series.
This is my design for another gay (I hope) superhero, done as an animation style model sheet. I’m not sure what to call him. The Black Hood and The Black Mask have already been taken.
This is my version of Thor, or at least it’s a naked guy with long blonde hair, drawn as much like Jack Kirby as I could manage in 1992.
This drawing reminds me of Alex Toth, in that I allow the figure to disappear into the background without any backlighting, a Tothian gimmick.
This seems to be a superhero design, done in late ’92, around the time I was gearing up to illustrate The Mark, a comic series published by Dark Horse Comics in ’93/’94.
