Fogtown Character Designs, Installment 2

All this week, in celebration of “Fogtown” in its new paperback release, I’m blogging/posting preparatory artwork done way back in late ’06. The project was long in it’s genesis, given that it wasn’t published until August ’10 in hardcover and August ’11 in paperback. This installment, I’m focusing on the main character in “Fogtown”, Frank Grissel, hard boiled, bisexual private eye. As you can see, he went through many changes.

In this drawing, I’m playing around, trying different possible looks.

If memory served, this drawing is based off #2 from the previous drawing. At least, that’s how it appears; I actually don’t remember.

This is a version modeled off Robert Mitchum, fleshing out original editor Bob Schreck’s suggestion.

This version is based off John Gavin, as per writer Andersen Gabrych’s suggestion.

Andersen later changed his mind, deciding he wanted Frank to look like Randy Couture, “mixed martial arts Hall-of-Famer, and former UFC title holder.

In the end, he ended up looking vaguely like Darwyn Cooke’s version of Slam Bradley.

Bent-Con Fundraiser

Actually, I was wrong in last Sunday’s Blog. This Sunday’s Faultline fundraiser is for Being Alive; they’re graciously letting Bent-Con piggy back on their event. Thank you muchly. I won’t be selling original artwork, etc, as I had assumed. I will be there, wearing my Bent-Con Tshirt and answering questions. See you there, hopefully.

Fogtown Character Designs

I was filing artwork tonight and ran across these character sketches for my recently out-in-paperback graphic novel, “Fogtown”. I’ll be posting more in the next few days.

That’s a link to the Faultline, a gay bear/leather/sm type of bar across Melrose Avenue from LA City College in Los Angeles, California. Next Sunday afternoon, during their weekly 2PM – 9PM “Classic Beer Bust”, they will closing off the parking lot and staging a fundraiser for Bent-Con 2. Part of the festivities will be a silent auction. I am donating 3 pieces of original artwork. This is your chance to acquire a Brad Rader/Flaming Artist original, quite possibly for a ridiculously low price, and help support an excellent cause.

Be there or be straight!

Ride 'Em Cowboy

This is another Picasso-esque drawing.

I worked as a security guard at the Norman Simon Museum of Art, in Pasadena California (USA) for 2 years in the late 70’s and early 80’s. They had a huge selection of Picasso drawings from his post-cubist period. I really liked them for their simplicity and eroticism. Unfortunately, that sort of simplicity and abstraction seems to be beyond me.

Continental Breakfast 4

This drawing reminds me of Picasso, sort of. It’s not as simple as his illustrations for Lysistrata, but it’s sort of along those lines.
