THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 15, 2013

The whimsy continues. I finally decided to use the
book I was using to sketch in as a source of ideas for artwork. This is not
intended as a comment on Atlanta, which, no doubt is a wonderful city (I
wouldn’t know; I’ve never been.)

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 14, 2013

Getting whimsical here. A
friend suggested that this would make an excellent pattern for cloth.

See if
you can spot the date on which this drawing was executed, spelled out in
penises.

Own a piece of Gay
Heath Care History

From the frontlines of the 1980’s AIDS crisis comes this is
a one-of-a-kind rarity: a copy of the poster announcing Los Angeles’
participation in the nationwide October 6, 1989 Day of Civil Disobedience.
Thousands marched, and many were arrested, in protest of Ronald Reagan and
George Bush’s silence and inaction in the face of this catastrophic
pandemic. Eventually, the Federal
Government bowed to the enormous pressure of the valiant men and woman fighting
for their very lives, leading to a much-needed overhaul of the nation’s
healthcare delivery system.

Unfortunately, the fight is by no means over, necessitating
the donation of this copy of the poster for auction by the artist, Bradley
C. Rader.
Mr. Rader was an original member of ACT UP/LA when it was formed in 1987, in
the wake of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
Mr. Rader worked in the ACT UP parade committee, designing floats and signs for
the 1989 Christopher Street West Parade, political cartoons for the
organization’s monthly newsletter, culminating in this poster.

Bradley Rader has since gone on the become an Emmy© Award winning animation director
(HBO’S Todd McFarlane’s “Spawn”), a graphic novelist (“Fogtown”, “Harry &
Dickless Tom”), and an internationally exhibited erotic artist (“Recycled
Erotica” at the One Way-1989, “Free Art” at A Different Light in Silverlake and
San Francisco –1992, a one-man-show at Mr. B’s in Amsterdam-2005, “The Art of
“Harry & Dickless Tom” and “The Art of “Fogtown” at Flazh!Alley Gallery in
San Pedro-2007 and 2010). 3 volumes of his work have been published at Flaming
Artist Press.

The
poster is from the original 1989 offset print run (the artist doesn’t remember
the size of the run, but it couldn’t have been larger than 1000). Its striking
colors of magenta and black are light fast, not like the colors from today’s
more fugitive computer printing methods. The piece is in excellent condition,
suitable for framing and proud display. It is more than just a piece of art; it
symbolizes the blood, sweat and tears countless men and women (and
transexuals— God Bless you, Connie Norman) swept up in this historic yet
ongoing struggle for health care rightsOwn a piece of Gay

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 13, 2013

I have nothing to say about
today’s date except, “Good luck.”

Today’s
drawing is much the same as yesterday’s- lightly sketched with colored pencil,
then drawn again with what looks like a combination of watercolor and gouache.
The source, again, is a photo clipped from a mid 80’s gay skin rag.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 12, 2013

Nothing special here— I lightly sketched it in
pencil, then painted the lines with watercolor or gouache. I based it off
another photo culled from mid’80’s newsstand gay-porn rags.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 11, 2013

I’m jumping ahead a few days
(re-the ordered sequence of drawing in my “Daily Penis” sketchbook that I began
on August 26. 2012 and completed on November 27th of the same year);
it seemed important to post these drawings (or, at least, the last one) on this
day.

I started working with cut paper a few days before I did these. I’d cut the shapes out, glue them down, at this point with Elmer’s glue, then draw back into them with Prismacolor or whatever I was using at the time.

The first and second
drawings work together. I cut a slit in the butt page and can slide the
partially adhered dick on the facing page through it, getting the whimsical
effect on the first drawing. When people turn the page they are surprised to
find the dick caught in the ass on the facing page. I have to caution them to
take care in extricating the dick.

The
third drawing pretty much speaks for itself. Anything I write will interfere
with audience projection.

Watercolor, possibly gouache, with minimal Prismacolor
underdrawing. I like it; very simple and direct. Very graphic.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 9, 2013

This drawing is done with
Prismacolors, one of my favorite drawing utensils. It doesn’t smear much, is
slightly erasable, and accepts multiple layering without too much waxy
build-up.

It is
done from a photograph.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 8, 2013

Y’all get 2 drawings today.

I had started this project
(doing a daily sketch in my spouse’s gifted 2013 American Express Calendar) on
August 26, 2012. I had started several pages into the book not wanting to draw
on pages with too much pre-printed crap thereon. After a few days, I realized I
was wasting paper and jumped back to the very front of the book.

This is my “Kirby Dots”
drawing, executed on the inside front cover. I think I used mostly a black
Tombo ABT brush pen with white-out pen corrections, except for the celestial
pubic hair, which appears to be dry brushed.

I ref’d Kirby here, but Bill Wray is more accurate, specifically in his “Big Blown Baby” miniseries for Dark Horse Comics.

There’s
nothing particularly phallic or penile about the second drawing. I was just
going with the artistic flow. It’s vaguely erotic though.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 7, 2013

Y’all get 3 drawings today.

The first drawing was
photo-reffed, done with sable brush dipped in India ink.

The second drawing is a self-portrait, again done with brush in ink.

The third drawing was a fortuitous accident. I had done a painting on the facing page with thickly painted gouache, so thickly painted that it seemed as if it would never dry. It smeared into the facing folio page (this page) when I shut the book. I tore that page out but was inspired by the staining on this page to do this drawing. Tombo ABT brush pens again. I like working this way: seeing a marred sheet of otherwise blank paper to see what the abstract shapes remind me of… sort of like seeing shapes in clouds. In my case, the shapes are all dicks.
