THE DAILY DICK, NOVEMBER 4, 2013

 For this
one, I did the drawing first on yellow construction paper, cut out the drawing
and traced it onto the page of the Am Ex date book destined for it’s adhesion.
Then I laid down heavy puddles of blue and green watercolor onto the page,
painted more shapes, wet into wet, into those shapes, and let the whole thing
dry. Then I glued the construction paper drawing onto that page, then drew back
into the drawing with colored pencil. The image was inspired by something I
found on the web.

THE DAILY DICK, NOVEMBER 3, 2013

I don’t have much to say about this one. I drew it in
less than 10 minutes. I rather like it for it’s Picasso-esque whimsicality. I
drew it in ballpoint pen, no under drawing.

THE DAILY DICK, NOVEMBER 2, 2013

Now HERE is Tony Soprano, if
not James Gandolfini. Here I am attempting a specific likeness of a specific
character, not merely drawing one of my “clones of desire” (a concept
articulated by the brilliant philosopher Dale Lazarof, writer of “Sticky” and “Manly”).http://prismcomics.org/profile.php?id=1496

It also puts on display my
continuing struggles with Photoshop. Basically I did a fake pen and ink
drawing. The only benefit I derived from using the program instead of pen and
ink on paper was the endless ability to re-size and re-do. Nothing to sneeze at
for sure (the lack thereof an ongoing frustration with the real thing) but
there’s more to the program than that. Hell, I’ve taken a couple of classes in
the damn thing. I just can’t make myself practice using the program
consistently enough to get adept in it.

This
drawing is not intended as an affront to Gandolfini or his mourning friends and
family. I like to think he would have approved, based on the scene in
“Sopranos” where his seated character displayed a hard-on through his pants
when contemplating his psychiatrist.

THE DAILY DICK, NOVEMBER 1, 2013

 Welcome to our third month
of daily dickery, with no end in sight.

This
drawing proves the point of yesterday’s essay. It was drawing four days prior
to yesterday’s Gandolfini coincidentally commemorative sketch, and is of the
same type of man typified by James Gandolfini, without actually being an
attempt to portray the actor or any of the characters he created.

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 31, 2013

This drawing, obviously, was
drawing the day James Gandolfini’s death was announced.

This saddened me, as I have
been hot for him for years, and enjoyed his performances in various films and
TV series. I especially like him in “Enough Said”; I thought he looked
especially good wearing a beard.

I thought the movie sucked,
in so far as his sex scenes with Julia Louis-Dreyfus were really chaste, almost
prudish. I wanted more flesh, more action, like maybe she would lean over an
suck on his nipple. Oh well; the opportunity is lost forever. Maybe there is
juicy material in the out takes; somehow I doubt it.

I am
aware that this sketch looks nothing particular like Mr. G; I was drawing one
of my “types”, my “clones of desire”, when I got the news. It’s a co-incidence
that the man in the sketch matches Gandolfini in his baldness and paunchiness,
in that these are attributes I find attractive anyway, which is why I find Mr.
G. attractive.

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 30, 2013

This is yet another post-stroke sketch, done yet
earlier than yesterday’s. It is executed with ballpoint pen, worked back into
with Tombo brush pen. It is very crude, not just in the line work put also in
the thought process. I allowed the distortion/exaggeration in order to include
everything I wanted in the drawing. Actually, I kind of like it.

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 29, 2013

We continue day #4 of our
vacations from the American Express “Daily Dick” sketchbook, concentrating for
the moment on sketches done in my post-stroke journal. These sketches have a
certain poignancy as they were executed during a time when I was unsure of my
drawing ability, uncertain about whether or not I’d be able to recover it. I’m
dropping back further in time with each day’s posing as I leaf backwards
through this journal, covering the period between March 20, 2013 (a month after
my spouse/lifemate John Callahan’s demise on February 17, 2013 to August 18.
2013, 3 months after my release from Glendale Memorial Hospital. The motivation
for this diversion of focus is that I am revisiting this volume before I file
it away.

No big
deal here, just a naked guy with a dick, drawn with ballpoint pen. Since his
hands and feet were out of frame, I decided to add them as inserts. As in, to
prove to myself that I wasn’t afraid of drawing feet or hands.

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 28, 2013

Today (October 25th; this posting has been
scheduled in advance), I another stab at the drawing I posted yesterday, drawn
back on July 7th. My implement is my Cintiq tablet using the
Photoshop program. I guess it’s an improvement, drawing –wise, but my Photoshop
technique is strictly playing chopsticks.

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 27, 2103

This drawing was done with
plain old pencil. It was crude but the best I could do at the time. I had made
my first post-stroke attempts at drawing only 2 months prior and still hadn’t
gotten it together.

2
months ago I showed “The Daily Dick” sketchbook, and its companion volume,

“The Daily Derriere” to a friend. He was insistent  that I write my thoughts about each drawing (on the right
page of each two page folio spread) on the facing left folio page. I protested
that the writing was likely to be visible through the thin paper even if it
didn’t immediately bleed through the paper immediately (I have observed this
happening over a period of years in my older sketchbooks, which is why I
stopped drawing/writing on both sides of the pages about 10 years ago). This
drawing is a case in point. I only drew it on the opposite side of a diary page
because I didn’t take it seriously, didn’t expect it to be any good.

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER

For the next few days we
will be taking a break from the AmEx sketchbook drawings. Instead, I will be
posting drawings done in the period after my April 2nd stroke.

This drawing was done on
August 8th, over 4 months since the dreaded event. I had mostly recovered
my drawing confidence by this point, if not necessarily my chops (I’m still not
sure about THAT.) It was done from memory This is the same man I drew in the
drawing dated 9-22-12.

Sigh…

This
drawing was sketched lightly with ball point pen and painted into with
watercolor.
