JANUARY 1, 2016
This is the first post of “THE
DAILY DERRIERE”, taken from scans of my “DAILY DERRIER” sketchbook. Like my
previous series, “THE DAILY DICK”, these are done in “The American Express
Appointment Book” for 2012. I started the series on January 1st,
2013, but was derailed from my daily schedule by life (or death) happening, in
this case my spouse, John Callahan, losing his prolonged battle with
metastasized prostate cancer on February 17th, and my near-fatal
stroke on April 4th.

NIGHT ON BALLED MOUNTAIN
In honor of Halloween, I’m posting a drawing I finished on the evening of September 11, 2001. I’d been working on it for a while, over 10 years in fact. I had originally intended it to be part of the “Free Art” series of drawing the were displayed at A Different Light in Silverlake back in 1991, but couldn’t figure out how to design the cavorting demons. Then, in the summer of 2001, I acquired a catalogue for Mr. S., a retailer of leather/bondage equipment and was duly inspired. But the events of that morning inspired me to finish the work. As with the other “Free Art” drawings, it is done on a full 30 x 40″ sheet of 3 ply cold press Strathmore art paper. It’s still for sale, framed, in case someone wants to buy it.

VAMPIRE PENIS 12

We come to the end of the sequence of drawings I call “Vampire
Penis”. Two nights ago I scrounged around in my studio looking for the
other individual panel drawings I did during this period intended for use in a
hypothetic non-narrative graphic short story. I was unable to find them;
neither could I find the stock pile of
scrap Strathmore 2 ply I had compiled intending to use toward said
projected narrative. Will the story of
the creepy dude with the lethal phallic-like appendage continue? Stay tuned.
VAMPIRE PENIS 11

(Continued from day 10) Looking at the drawings 3 or 4 years later I
actually like them quite a bit. They remind me of Jordi Bernet if I do say so
myself. As for drawing small, who says I have to continue? I can draw any size
I want, including in the computer (gasp).
VAMPIRE PENIS 10
One of the reasons I ran out of steam on this project is that I got
tired of working so small; the original’s image area is 4.5” square. I
regretted choosing such a limitation, wasn’t enjoying the process or the
result. (to be continued)
