THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 3, 2013

I sketched this first in
purple Prismacolor, then painted into it with watercolor and gouache. I haven’t
much to say about it.

I guess I could comment on
the photo and the pages it is printed across.

The photo is captioned: “The
SkyPark atop the triple towers of Singpore’s Marina Bay Sands Resorts features
an infinity pool billed as the world’s largest outdoor swimming pool at such a
dizzying height.”

This
definitely sounds like a bucket list item—see it while you still can, before
the world goes to Hell. Can you imagine being in this place when the oil runs
out? I wonder if the water in the pool is potable?

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 2, 2103

This drawing was done in
ball-point pen, one of my favorite sketching tools, as it is easy to transport,
flexible in application.

In
this case, I didn’t need to transport the pen, or the sketchbook (American
Express Date Book). This drawing was done from loving memory. “Sigh…”

THE DAILY DICK, OCTOBER 1, 2013

Nothing to say about this drawing that I didn’t say
about yesterday’s drawing. Except, wow, I’ve been posting every day for a month.
I feel like the Amy Adams character in the “Julie and Jula” movie, where she
posted every day about cooking another one of Julia Child’s French Cooking
recipes. Except that I’m posting about penises.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 30, 2013

I like this drawing muchly; I like the way I inked it
drybrush. I wish I was brave enough or skilled enough or whatever enough to ink
my comics this way. I tried inking “Fogtown” like this in the beginning, but it
was looking like crap; not spontaneous and gestural, just messy. I was trying
to imitate Milt Caniff, Tony Salmons and Jordi Bernet. But I was working too
small. It’s amazing how large the originals for “Steve Canyon” and “Terry and
the Pirates” were.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 29, 2013

Here, I’m getting the hang
of working over, being inspired by an existing photo. Some might see my drawing
as a snide comment on patriotism. Such was not my intent. Given the nature of
my self-imposed assignment, I now see hard-ons everywhere I look.

This one
is pen and ink, with painted highlights in gouache.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

As I begin doing better, or
more ambitious paintings, the nature of the paper becomes somewhat
constraining. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, the paper in the American
Express Date Book is pretty thin, lacking in body, and has a weird quality of
being initially repellant to paint, then becomes too porous.  Oh well.

It is
done in watercolor.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013

I rather like this painting. It is an agreeable
combination of abstract and descriptive. I like the gestural quality of the
paint, as well as the colors. It is done in watercolor.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 26. 2013

These drawings were influenced by the 2007 movie,
“Superbad”, specifically the penis drawings drawn by David Goldberg, attributed
to Seth the character portrayed by Jonah Hill. I wanted to affect a child-like
look. These are drawn with ball point pens.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 25, 2013

This drawing continues in the same vein as
yesterday’s— even the same penis spaceship, from a different angle. I drew it
in Prismacolors, punched up with white gouache to make it stand out from the
background photo.

THE DAILY DICK, SEPTEMBER 24, 2013This drawing was influenced by the 2007 movie, “Superbad”, specifically the penis drawings drawn by David Goldberg, attributed to Seth the character portrayed by Jonah Hill. I wanted to affect a child-like look. I riffed on the “Superbad” aesthetic for the next several days in the “Daily Dick” sketchbook; stay tuned. I will probably revisit this kind of drawing in the near future; it is fertile ground for exploration.
